What is Protection Grade of Diesel Generator

When you choose a diesel generator, its protection grade also is an important factor that you should consider.

What is protection grade?
Protection grade also called ingress protection( IP), this system is written by IEC ( international electrotechnical commission), indicating the level of dust-proof and moisture-proof of electrical equipment. Protection grade consists of two number, the bigger the number is, the higher the level of protection.



Indicating methods:
The protection grade usually is indicated by IP and two number, the number indicates the protection level.
The first number indicates the range of dust resistance of the equipment, or the extent to which people are protected from hazards in a sealed environment. Represents a level to prevent solid foreign bodies from entering, the highest level is 6.
The second number indicates the degree of waterproofing of the equipment. Represents the level of water intake prevention. The highest level is 8.

We should choose the suitable generator according the working situation.

In generally, the commons protection grade is IP21, IP23, IP44, IP54, IP55, IP56, IP65. Different protection grade of generator is suitable for different working situation. Most of them are used in dry and clean industrial and mining enterprises. In addition to inflammable and explosive gases, dust, humidity and other special environments, the actual use of "IP23" level of protection is OK, there is no need to use a higher level of protection.

There is internal and external ventilated heat window on end cap and seat of IP23 generator, this kind of generator is suitable used in clean, dry and ventilated environment. But some customers chose this kind of generator without considering the suitable conditions of the generator.

Especially in the environment with conductive dust, it is quite unsafe to use this kind of generator. Once the conductive dust enters the generator winding, it will affect the ventilation and heat dissipation of the generator winding. At the same time, it will easily lead to short-circuit electrical fault, which will seriously affect the service life of the generator. Therefore, when choose generator, it must match the actual operating conditions.
