The Function of Fuel Filter in Diesel Generator Set Part 1

During the storage, transportation, and refueling process of fuel, impurities such as dust, sand, and metal shavings often mix in. If these impurities enter the precision components of the fuel system (fuel injection pump, injector) along with the fuel, it will cause increased wear and even jamming of the parts, directly affecting the normal operation of the diesel engine. Therefore, a fuel filter must be installed in the fuel supply system to eliminate various impurities in the fuel, ensure that the precision components of the fuel system are not worn or blocked, ensure the normal operation of the fuel supply system, ensure the stable operation of the diesel engine, and improve reliability.

Fuel filters can be divided into two categories based on their filtering effect: coarse filters and fine filters. Generally, diesel engines connect these two types of filters in series in the fuel supply system (on the pipeline between the fuel pump and the throttle body inlet). Unlike lubrication system filtration, the coarse and fine filters of the lubrication system are used in parallel.

 

The fuel coarse filter is installed before the fine filter, and only filters out larger mechanical impurities (0.06-0.07mm or more) in the fuel. Some diesel engines do not have a separate coarse filter, but instead add a filter screen at the outlet of the fuel tank to achieve coarse filtering.

 

The fuel fine filter is generally made of felt, cotton thread, filter paper, etc. as the filter element. The function of a fuel fine filter is to filter out very fine impurities in the fuel to ensure that the fuel sent to the fuel system is not contaminated.

 

The Z12V190 diesel engine filter consists of a filter housing and a filter element. The shell is composed of two filter cartridges cast together, which are connected in parallel and have an identical structure. The filter element is made of felt, covered with a layer of silk cloth on the outside, and a steel cylinder pressed from steel plate on the inside. The steel cylinder is surrounded by holes. The filter element is mounted on the filter rod, supported by a spring and felt sealing ring at the lower end. The filter cover is repelled at the upper end of the filter element, and the internal space of the filter element is sealed with a gasket and felt sealing ring in the middle. The fuel pressurized by the fuel pump is connected through the inlet pipe and enters the middle of the two shells from the bottom of the shell. It is then filtered by the felt outside the filter element and enters the interior. It flows out of the outlet hole through the oil hole on the filter element and is sent to the fuel injection pump.
