As a national strategy, the “Belt and Road Initiative” brings opportunities and also challenges.
In China, “Yuchai’s Machine Powered by Green Energy” is widely spread all over China, and the “Yuchai Phenomenon” sparks shocks nationwide. Yuchai's employees strive constantly to overcome numerous difficulties, gaining significant reputations in the market, including the best engine for medium-sized trucks, the first-rate engine for coaches over six meters in length, the highest-quality engine for harvesters with over 70 horsepower and the best marine and G-drive engines. Yuchai now has become the largest production base of internal combustion engine in China - a big leap from a previously small-scale farm implement plant. After decades of exploration and development, Yuchai has transformed to a full-fledged and sure-footed enterprise.
Powerful Yuchai Is Heading Abroad
Early in the development at home, Yuchai, with a dream of going global, has set its sight on abroad, shipping its products along the waterways and fisheries of Southeast Asia.
But how should Yuchai make its first move in such a big world? With the down-to-earth spirit, Yuchai chose two regions - Southeast Asia and Latin America - as the breakthrough points on land and sea respectively. In 1997, Yuchai sounded the clarion call to march towards overseas markets, building offices in Vietnam and Central America. And the rapid development of the two markets makes themselves the bases for Yuchai to expand markets abroad. Later, in order to move faster to expand overseas markets, Yuchai had successively set up offices in Russia, Egypt, Thailand, India, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Burma, and countries in Central Asia and Europe from 2006 to 2016. Until now, Yuchai has established a well-constructed marketing network abroad, opening up a new magnificent chapter for Yuchai’s overseas market expansion.
Exploiting Boundary Comes with Outstanding Achievements
Yuchai’s expansion in overseas markets is a glorious part of the overall development of Yuchai.
Before 2005, Yuchai just exported hundreds of machines to Vietnam every year, and only 1,000-odd machines in 2005. While in 2009, Yuchai's exports to Vietnam exceeded 10,000, and the figure approached 20,000 in 2015, hitting a record high. Nowadays, the number of engines hold by Yuchai in Vietnam tops 110,000.
In Central America, Yuchai relies on the refitted vehicles to create a record with 10,000-odd machines exported a year by self-operation or by proxy. And now there are over 30,000 machines sold by Yuchai in Central America.
Before 2010, only dozens of machines of Yuchai were exported to Burma a year, while Yuchai has exported over 5,000 machines to Burma a year since 2014, representing the fastest-growing overseas market. And now the number of engines hold by Yuchai in Burma exceeds 29,000.
In Saudi Arabia, Yuchai has repeatedly won the bidding by local governments for school buses; Over 90% Chinese buses on the road of Saudi Arabia are powered by Yuchai’s engines. Now, Yuchai can sell over 20,000 engines in Saudi Arabia.
In Philippines, the coach market is highly open, with coach manufacturers running neck and neck. And Yuchai’s machines have become the first choice for end customers and coach manufacturers since 2011. At present, Yuchai can secure 16,000-odd machines sold in Philippines.
During the period of the “12th Five-Year Plan”, Yuchai's exports grow by over 53% to arrive at 160,000-odd machines, compared with the period of the “11th Five-Year Plan”. Recently, 2,000 buses equipped with Yuchai YC6GN natural gas engines arrived at Yangon, Burma in batches, representing the latest achievement of Yuchai's products in the ASEAN market. Two months earlier, 600 Ankai A9 high-end coaches equipped with Yuchai YC6MK engines were sold to Saudi Arabia. By seizing the strategic opportunities of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, Yuchai seeks innovation in service model, reorients the layout in overseas markets, increases investment in markets abroad, and finally sees a growth against the trend. Yuchai’s exports to overseas markets reached 43,000 in 2016 and 24,000 in the first half of 2017, growing by 4.6% year on year. Whether in traditional regional markets or potential newly-emerging markets, Yuchai continuously explores and expands overseas markets from Southeast Asia, the Middle East to Latin America.
The Achievements Along the Belt and Road Lay a Foundation for the Future
So far, Yuchai has set up 10 offices and 3 on-site institutions along the Belt and Road. Nearly 150 overseas service agents are dotted around 41 countries across the globe, and more than 360,000 sets of machines have entered the overseas markets. Yuchai’s products can be found in 170-plus countries and regions from five continents. With countries along the Belt and Road being the main market, Yuchai’s products have seen great success in the Vietnamese and Burmese truck market and the Philippine and Saudi Arabian bus market.
By virtue of the early development abroad, Yuchai has established a primary overseas marketing and service network system, which in turn lays a solid foundation for Yuchai’s next move in the market development. Driven by the Belt and Road Initiative strategy, the competition in the overseas markets is getting fiercer than ever. Nonetheless, Yuchai will raise investments in the overseas markets and further retain its competitive edge. For one thing, Yuchai will go on building and perfecting its marketing network system, set up new institutions in burgeoning potential markets like those in Central Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America, beef up manpower in the new branches of traditional Southeast Asia market, and penetrate the markets in a bid to promote coordinated development of all regional markets. For another thing, Yuchai will also improve security services by means of establishing relevant parts & components centers and service training centers in Vietnam, Burma, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Central America, in order to make sure that the after-sales services can meet the rapid development of overseas markets. In the meantime, Yuchai will focus on the overseas refit businesses and tap into the local aftermarkets, and thus enhance the brand influence of Yuchai in the overseas markets. In the years to come, Yuchai will carry forward localized operation through starting overseas companies and joint ventures. Eventually, Yuchai shall become an international brand that exports technologies rather than products.
